Eggs Galore at Sasekani Corporative
Unemployment no longer exists as part of vocabulary for 21 members of
Sasekani Corporative at Mashoniville in Thulamela Municipality who
have made selling eggs their business.
According to the Managing Director, Joe Khosa, lack of jobs in the area
compelled him and his five colleagues to establish Sasekani Corporative in 2003.
“We realized that most businesses in our area sold eggs that were supplied by enterprises
located far from Mashoniville. It was therefore quite imperative to start egg producing farm
so that we could tap into the abundant market and create jobs at the same time,” says Khosa.
He adds: “In 2004 we formalized our business by registering it as a trading entity. Our management
has six members comprising of three men and three women. When the business grows, we intend to employ
more people in addition to the 21 employees that we currently have. We supply eggs to Makhoma Butchery”.
Regarding the infrastructure at the project, Khosa says: “We have one 40 X 12 metres chicken run which accommodates
6 720 egg layers. We are fortunate because Thulamela Municipality also threw its weight behind the corporative by
building a storeroom in 2007”.
Sasekani Corporative aims to produce and sell eggs to individuals, businesses, hawkers and communities, says Khosa,
adding: “We are alleviating poverty and hunger through this agri-business. We also interact with local farmers in our
endeavour to promote organic farming”.
Although there are several challenges including building a second chicken run, Ward 12 councilor, Cllr Mzamani Manganyi
says the corporative is prospering due to the support that it gets from government departments such as Health and Social
Development, Labour, Trade and Industry and Thulamela Municipality.
