Address by the Honourable Mayor of Thulamela
Municipality Khosi Vho – TN Makumbane during the
Thulamela Youth Council Relaunch
VENUE : COUNCIL CHAMBER
DATE : 20 SEPTEMBER 2008
TIME : 10H00 Programme Director, Councillors,
Delegates from South African Youth Council – Limpopo
Province, Vhembe District Youth Council, Independent
Electoral Commission, Department of Economic
Development, Environment and Tourism, Political
Formations, Non Governmental Organisations, Ward Youth
Councils and Youth in general. I greet you all.
Programme Director, We are gathered here today to
celebrate the re-launching of a very important organ of
this Municipality – the Youth Council. Youth Council has
been founded in the principle of being an apolitical
structure that cut across all the devides. It has a
direct contact with aspirations of youth at grass roots
level. It is composed of Political, Religious, Social
and non Governmental Organisations whose objectives and
missions are geared towards development of the youth.
Programme Director,
Today’s launch marks the fifth re-launching of this
Council. Immeasurable achievements have been made since
its inauguration in 2002; such as :-
- Staging of Thulamela Youth Entrepreneurship
Summits,
- School visits to motivate students to commit
themselves educationally during the academic year,
- Prison visits to comfort and encourage the
inmates,
- Projects visits to provide information about
opportunities and many more.
The achievement which deserves special mention is
the establishment of the Youth Advisory Centre at
Malamulele Club House. The Centre was launched last
week on the 12th September 2008. Programme
Director,
The Youth Council has huge responsibilities on
its shoulders. It has a responsibility to establish
Youth Structures in all wards throughout the
Municipality. It must organise events such as
Economic Development Workshops to equip our up and
coming young Entrepreneurs. The 2009 General
Elections are on our doorsteps. As such the Youth
Council has a huge responsibility to mobilise the
Youth to go to the polls in large numbers. The
immediate task facing the Youth is for them to
register for the coming elections. The Youth are
further urged to intensify the ID Campaign whereby
youths of 16 years and above are encouraged to apply
for Identity documents. Programme Director,
As a Municipality, we have put in place
structures which help to address the impact of
HIV/AIDS. We encourage you the youth to abstain and
be faithful, or otherwise condomize. We also have
structures which deal with Youth development such as
the Youth Commission, Umsombobvu Youth Fund, etc. I
encourage you to make use of these structures. Our
Municipality also has in place Internship programme
which helps Youth graduates to acquire skills and
experience necessary for employment. Programme
Director,
As we approach the end of the year, it will be
more appropriate for the Youth to devote most of
their time into their studies. I thus wish the Youth
Good Luck during the oncoming examinations. I
THANK YOU ALL
